We’ve hit the ground running already!
Back on deck & excited about the future of engineered timber.
Tutetawha’s new Wharekai in Taupō –
Structural Timber Elements used as the Main Architectural Feature
CREDITS: Architect: RM Designs / Engineer: EngCo / Builder: RBS Group
TimberLab was honoured to supply Glulam and LVL components for this Wharekai. This 371m2 building proudly displays the natural beauty of its structural timber components; NZ grown Pinus Radiata portal frames, beams, posts, ceiling panels and walls.
The project involved a collaborative supply between Woodspan® (roof panels), XLam (wall panels) and TimberLab (Glulam / LVL beams and columns).
Co-ordination of shop drawings was completed using consistent 3D design software which ensured an accurately co-ordinated BIM model. All timber members were CNC fabricated from the BIM model to millimetre accuracy to ensure each element fitted perfectly together onsite. Early engagement by TimberLab and RBS GROUP was critical to the success of the project and guaranteed that sufficient time was available for the timber elements to be accurately co-ordinated.
Concealed connections between the beams and columns create a seamless structure which flows throughout the building. Glulam elements were used for external balcony structure and LVL elements were used for internal beams between portal frames. All beams and columns went to site with a factory-sanded finish and fixings were pre-installed in TimberLab’s Auckland factory.
