CLT and LVL Frames

This 940m2 Operations Facility for Todd Energy is located near the town of Waitara, just north of New Plymouth. The building utilises LVL support frames in combination with Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) floor, wall and roof system to provide an efficient hybrid timber structure. Solid CLT stairs were even used between levels.

Being an Importance Level 4 building, seismic forces in the structure are large. Castellated connection details in the CLT panels and LVL beams allow for efficient transfer of loads throughout the structure to significantly reduce the amount of metalwork fixings. Castellations also help to locate beams and panels accurately onsite making for easy installation.  TimberLab’s 5-axis CNC processing centre efficiently profiled these castellations to the fine tolerances required.

CLT raw billets were supplied by XLam and CNC-fabricated by TimberLab Solutions. The panels were delivered to site with self-adhered building wrap pre-applied in TimberLab’s factory. This prefabrication increased speed of construction and helped protect the timber from site moisture.

LVL raw billets were supplied by Carter Holt Harvey and re-laminated into larger section sizes by TimberLab. All LVL members were CNC-fabricated by TimberLab and delivered to site with the CLT panels in a co-ordinated approach to suit the build sequence.

One-Stop-Shop Solution – A focus for TimberLab over the past 12 months has been to enhance our engineered wood product solution offering to Glulam, LVL and CLT. We manufacture Glulam, re-laminate LVL and CNC fabricate LVL & CLT billets.  Providing options for a range of structural products (Glulam, LVL & CLT) means the structural system can be optimised and still delivered under a single procurement package. Having one fabricator responsible for modelling and CNC-processing all products ensures that each element is fabricated to the same tolerances / accuracy, and that all site deliveries are suitably co-ordinated.
