Award Winning Craftsmanship - Cathedral Grammar Junior School recognised at the 2017 Timber Design Awards.

The 2017 Gala Timber Design Award function at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland last Thursday saw Cathedral Grammar Junior School scoop the Overall Supreme Award. Designed by Andrew Barrie Lab Architects, the intricately detailed engineered timber structure was manufactured by TimberLab Solutions.

This outstanding project achieved an impressive total of three Awards -
 

  • Commercial Architectural Excellence award
  • Highly Commended Engineering Innovations award
  • As well as the prestigious OVERALL SUPREME AWARD!

The extent of accurate interlocking detailing and prefabrication was handled with careful precision using our 5 Axis CNC Bridge. The judges commented on the high standard of craftsmanship displayed in the design and execution of this unique structure. The following pictures illustrate the finished timber structure using selected fabricated LVL elements.

BulletPointT-65-879Oct 2016 - FURTHER CONGRATULATIONS - Andrew Barrie Lab & Tezuka Architects. Winners Again.

The Cathedral Grammar Junior School won a Gold Pin at the Best Design Awards – Spatial > Public and Institutional Spaces category.

The awards are run by the Designers Institute of New Zealand and cover the full range of design disciplines from graphics and websites through to architecture and urban design.

TimberLab is honoured to have been involved with this unique engineered timber building system.

BulletPointT-65-879October 2016 - TimberLab invests in Staff – As part of our ongoing commitment to providing our team with development opportunities, TimberLab has been assisting some of our employees to improve their Communication & Leadership skills. MIT were engaged to provide onsite training and education for two groups of our team. The staff have benefited greatly from this experience; both in home & work situations.

They enjoyed their sessions – laughter could be heard from the classroom on many occasions.

TimberLab's CNC technology achieves new levels of detailing - interlocking timber members with tolerance of plus/minus 1mm.
Judges Comments: This is a very telling example of what craftsmanship looks like in the 21st century: an extremely skillful and innovative integration of contemporary technology with traditional techniques and materials. Barrie Lab & Tezuka Architects used CNC technology for the construction of a laminated veneer timber structure using traditional timber joints rather than the steel normally required for pieces of such size. The process required exactitude and innovation. Its success was due in part to rigorous documentation as much as excellent communication with a number oaf experts. The attention to detail in crafting exacting junctures is a testament to the 'art of the machine.' The reference to the exposed wooden structures of the neo-gothic period is appropriate to the school's location in a Victorian city. This structure was technically demanding, innovative and it pushed the local boundaries of CNC technology with traditional elements - all while delivering an elegant interior. SEE MORE

BulletPointT-65-879 - April 2016 - Prefabricated cassette floors on a grand scale. Each floor section covers up to 16 square metres. Using a Timber Concrete Composite (TCC) design developed by CHH Woodproducts, TimberLab has prefabricated these cassettes using LVL joists and plywood. With CNC technology, shear keys have been rebated into the joists. Once delivered to site the cassettes are lifted onto first floor framing in quick time.
A concrete topping is laid over the prefabricated panels and a light weight TCC floor is complete in much less time than conventional concrete floors. - An innovative solution for multi-storey construction that saves weight, time and money.

TimberLab has been producing prefabricated timber structures, nationally and internationally; mainly in the commercial arena for over 50 years. The recent acquisition of NZ’s first 5 axis CNC bridge processor – Weinmann MP240 has significantly increased our capabilities in this area. Specialising in Engineered Timber systems (mainly Glulam and fabricated LVL) we have well established quality systems and equipment to handle complete projects from small pergolas up to large multi-storey structures.
